Chang Tso-Chi

Chang Tso-Chi, born in 1961 and graduated from the Department of Theatre Arts in Chinese Culture University, had followed and worked with many famous film directors, including Yu Kan-Pi, Yim Ho, Tsui Hark, etc. Through working with these directors, he learned and improved himself consistently. Chang’s first film production, Midnight Gunshot, failed to release in Taiwan due to a certain reason. In 1996, he wrote and directed “Ah Chung”, a feature film about Ba Jia Jiang (Eight Generals), a religious ceremony in Taiwan. His adoption of nonprofessional actors as main casts drew the attention of international film festivals. In 1999, he directed “Darkness and Light”, in which he again used mostly nonprofessional actors to depict stories of the blind. The influence of film was so enormous that it wrote many records in Tokyo International Film Festival. Afterwards, director Chang shot a Hakka television drama series, and then applied that experience to his next film, “The Best of Times”, in summer of 2002. In 2007, director illustrates the struggle between familial love and humanity in “Soul of a Demon”. To fulfill his father’s wish, “Dad, How are you?” is shot in 2008. His next film work in 2010, “When Love Comes”, broke the record by being nominated for 14 awards, 4 of which were awarded to the film. In 2011, director made a historical war short film, “Sparkles”, and another short film, “Love is Missing”, to pay his tribute to director Hou Hsiao Hsien’s classic A City of Sadness. In 2013, his latest film, “A Time in Quchi”, is now in post-production.

In 2011, Chang Tso Chi is awarded the 15th National Award for Arts.
